Who Dat Gon Win the NFC South: Not These Guys

Boy am I tired of hearing about the Saints and their feel good comeback story. In case you don’t know, the Saints won the Super Bowl last year (speaking as a Vikes fan, if it wasn’t for a few mishaps on the Vikings’ part it could have been them). That’s good and all, now it’s time to prove you can do it again, or at least make the playoffs.

No matter how successful a team is in the NFC South one year, they always come crashing down the next. Over the past decade or so, no team in the division has won back-to-back division titles. This is one of the main reasons why I am picking the Falcons to win the division.

Another thing, nobody seems to be talking about the Saints as a title contender this year. One of the reasons could be because there hasn’t been a repeat since the Patriots dynasty earlier in the decade. Some are even saying it’s because they are still celebrating their win last year. Whatever. Once the season starts they will be geared up and ready to go just as any other team.

All of the key playmakers are back from last year, so that definitely is a plus. The question is can they duplicate the results from last year. I don’t think they will be as dominant through the first 13 games like they were last year but they will put up a solid season. The Falcons will give them a test this time around as well as the Panthers. In the end, I have the Saints at 11-5, placing second in the NFC South.

Thomas out with bruised ribs

New Orleans running back Pierre Thomas left the Saints’ game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with bruised ribs.

The injury appeared to occur during the second quarter of Sunday’s game on a 26-yard run. After being looked at by trainers on the sideline, Thomas went back into the game, but team officials said in the second half that he would sit out the remainder of the game.

Thomas is New Orleans’ leading rusher with 793 yards this season, including 60 yards and an 8-yard touchdown in the first half against the Buccaneers.

Taking Flight

A year ago NFL MVP voters held the Saints’ 8-8 record against Drew Brees in balloting for the league’s top individual honor.

They’re going to have to find a new excuse this year.

Thanks to their Monday night manifesto, the Saints are one of 14 teams in NFL history to start a season 11-0, and Brees has surged to the lead of a competitive MVP race between himself, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Vikings quarterback Brett Favre.

Brees might lack the star power, market size and résumé of his more celebrated competitors, but as he showed against another of the league’s golden boys on Monday night, Brees is outshined by no one. He’s quarterbacking the best team in football, and his numbers are superior to any player in the game, including Manning and Favre.

Considering the quality of the opponent and national stage, Brees’ effort on Monday night was the signature performance of his stellar career.

The new ‘Greatest Show On Turf’

The surface the New Orleans Saints play upon at the Louisiana Superdome is indeed artificial. And, since “The Greatest Show on Sportexe Momentum” doesn’t quite have the same ring to it, the 2009 Saints are drawing direct comparisons to those St. Louis Rams teams that turned the Edward Jones Dome scoreboard into a veritable pinball machine- counter as the 20th century gave way to the 21st.

The resemblance, in many ways is uncanny.

In the Rams’ stage production, the role of clinically-accurate signal-caller was played by Kurt Warner, who won two league MVP awards in three years on the strength of his right arm. Though smaller in stature, Drew Brees is, like Warner, a quarterback who can hit a target on either eye from 40 yards away and is generally impossible to pressure (just ask the Giants) due to a quick delivery and motherboard-fast decision-making ability.

Playing the role of savant-like play-caller, the one St. Louis filled with the professorial Mike Martz, is head coach Sean Payton. Like Martz, Payton attacks, attacks, and attacks some more, keeping opponents off balance with an intricate scheme built around the short pass but also fully capable of a ground-chewing power run or a highlight-reel-worthy deep throw.

Brees recalls ‘06 courtship with Dolphins

The quarterback who got away is finally coming to Miami to play Sunday.

Drew Brees will play the Dolphins for the first time since they courted him as a free agent in 2006. He has since thrown for 15,310 yards and 101 scores for the New Orleans Saints, while the Dolphins are on their seventh starting quarterback and third coach in the past four seasons.

The Saints outbid the Dolphins, then coached by Nick Saban. New Orleans offered Brees $10 million guaranteed even though he was recovering from a serious shoulder injury.

Saints’ O-line in synch both on and off the field

New Orleans lineman Zach Strief and Jon Stinchcomb stood side-by-side, feet shoulder-width apart.

With nimble synchronicity, the lumbering duo tapped away in tandem on fake electric guitars while playing the video game Rock Band in the middle of the locker room.

It’s the kind of teamwork that has helped the Saints’ offensive line make Drew Brees one of the least sacked quarterbacks in the NFL.

“We’re not all alike, but we get along well,” Stinchcomb said after he’d put down the plastic guitar following Wednesday’s practice. “That’s not only on the field, but off, and I know for a fact it carries over because there are times when it’s a heated situation and you’ve got to be able to work with the guys across the O-line.
